Bonding Q & A

What is bonding?

Tooth bonding is an easy and inexpensive method of repairing damaged teeth. Since bonding doesn’t need to be custom made like veneers, the entire process can be done in just one visit to your dentist.

A tooth-colored material is bonded to your tooth, filling any cracks or holes and, if necessary, adding length to your tooth. The material used in bonding is a composite resin — a mixture of plastic and glass that looks almost identical to your natural teeth in color and opacity.

Why might I need teeth bonding?

Tooth bonding can fix many smile imperfections whether you were born with them or they are the result of an injury. Tooth bonding can fix:

  • Large gaps between your teeth
  • Cracks
  • Chips
  • Discoloration
  • Short teeth
  • Exposed roots

While most uses of tooth bonding are strictly cosmetic, your dentist can recommend bonding as an alternative to a tooth filling or to protect the exposed root of a tooth that is causing sensitivity. With bonding, you can enjoy a full smile without the defects that make you feel insecure.

What can I expect at my teeth bonding appointment?

The bonding process can be performed in just one visit to Kluth Family & Cosmetic Dentistry. You don’t need to take steps to prepare for your appointment: just set aside about an hour and show up ready for a beautiful new smile.

When you arrive at the office, your dentist looks at your teeth and chooses the correct color of the resin to match them. Then, the surface of your tooth is etched and scratched to create a rough surface for the bond to cling to.

Once the tooth is prepared, your dentist applies the resin and smooths it into the correct shape. An ultraviolet light or laser dries the resin, securing it into place. When it’s hard, it can be further trimmed, shaped, and polished to a lustrous shine.

For about 48 hours after your appointment, you should avoid coffee, wine, and smoking. These can stain the bonds. You should take care of them as you would your normal teeth, brushing them often and getting professional cleanings regularly.

If you have unsightly tooth damage or unnaturally shaped or sized teeth, tooth bonds can give you a pristine smile. To schedule a tooth bonding appointment, call or schedule online.
